For the last couple of years, I’ve done something that made me feel super nervous AND genuinely excited at the same time.
I knew it would force me to take a much needed break from work, have fun, be creative, embrace my silly side and have deep belly laughs.
I also knew it would be a major stretch of my comfort zone. I had a feeling that I would soon feel very uncomfortable.
But I couldn’t fight this sense that it would be worth it.
And I was right.
But I wouldn’t have experienced this without a bunch of other awesome folk joining my team and doing it with me.
All of us, newbies, were in it together.
So what did we do?
We signed up for GISH (Greatest International Scavenger Hunt) – a one week challenge founded by Supernatural actor Misha Collins that aims to do good in the world and have fun in the process.
What does it involve?
The first challenge is to form a team. Team members can be located all over the world – and our team spanned from different cities in Australia, to the USA, to Europe, to the Phillipines and to South Africa.
Some members I had met before in real-life or online, and other members I was meeting on the GISH challenge for the first time.
We found ourselves thrown in to a weird and wonderful world doing many things for the first time and frequently saying “I can’t believe I just did/said that” or “You won’t believe what I just Googled!”!
You’ll see on the pictures on this page some of the things we got up to the first year. During GISH challenge week we were sent 100s of tasks to divide amongst team members. We would each go through the tasks and tick off which ones we wanted to do, leaving those that didn’t appeal to us to other members.
Over the course of the week some members:
- Decorated toilets or decorated walls;
- Made dominatrix costumes, fancy beanies, ‘beard gardens’, shoes out of bread, togas out of lettuce and suits out of toilet paper wrap;
- Created art using nose as a paintbrush;
- Made portraits out of cat fur, out of skittles, and out of flowers;
- Solved puzzles and riddles, created new words, and figured out mysteries;
- Embarrassed themselves in public spaces (#MyWorseNightmare #IntrovertAlert #StillDitIt);
- Tried to catch jelly in our mouths;
- Did random acts of kindness;
- Cosplayed as their pets, spied on their pets, and dressed up their pets;
- Created little plays and songs; and
The winning team – the team who gets the most points – wins an overseas trip. We certainly didn’t win, but speaking for myself, I had the most fun I’ve had in a long time.
So next year, I’m going at it again – and I would love if you would join me.
GISH generally runs over the last week of August.
Depending on your other commitments that week, you might only complete a few activities – or you might dive in and complete loads like I did last year. (I decided to take the week off client sessions to just have a week for me, doing silly GISH activities, and resting in between.)
It costs $25.01 USD to register. If money is tight right now, I’m happy to offer scholarships to a couple of DreamForOthers team members, so just flick me an email and let me know.
If you want to join, register via this link, and request to join the DreamForOthers team. If you have any troubles or questions just email me at Naomi(at)naomiarnold(dot)com.
Please feel free to invite anyone and everyone who you think would be interested in joining us – we need at least 9 people to form a team. But please, only people who are in for the fun of it – if you’re a hardcore GISHER out to win, this is not the team for you (GOOD LUCK! WE HOPE YOU WIN IT!!!!). We are a relaxed team, here to have fun amongst the juggling act of life.
NOTE: Registrations have now closed. I will update this post once they open again in 2020!
